SMART Goals

Written by:

SMART is an acronym used to make goals and a plan to realize them. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely. So in this instance my over all goal is the be physically healthier, which I broke into sub categories of exercise more and eat better. This is a SMART goal for eating better. Specifically I want to focus on fruit and veg intake. I will measure it by ensuring I eat at least 1 fruit and 1 veg serving per week. I know that is not much and not nearly as much as it should be but considering I’m starting at inconsistent intake which sees me not eat any fruit or veg some weeks it is the goal I need to start with, which ties into the achievable part. I’m recognizing where I am starting and not expecting myself to change overnight and instead using this goal as a stepping stone. Also in the achievable category I am recognizing that my depression makes it difficult for me to consistently use fresh fruit and veg before they go bad, so I am recognizing that I need to rely on frozen fruit and veg to optimize my chances of success. Relevant is a chance to check in with why I’m setting this goal which is that I want to improve my physical health. Lastly the goal should be timely. I, like most people, need my goals to have some sort of check in or end point so I can have that feeling of success that will encourage me to continue with my goals.
