It’s marvelous how the human body and mind adapt to changes. Many people are familiar with the memes about what 60 degrees Fahrenheit feels like in spring vs autumn. We adjust rather quickly to wild swings in weather throughout the year. While there are a variety of ways in which our adaptability shines through and I would love to hear about them and maybe discuss in more detail in another post, this post will focus on temperature because it is very relevant to me in my life at this moment.
In my apartment in Boston our heat was only turned off by management on May 29. However, prior to that our heat in the apartment was broken. Our thermostat is a dial and the way we turn off the heat is by setting it to a lower temperature than it is in the apartment so it never turns it on. For the past 2 months at least, we have had our thermostat set to 50 degrees, the lowest it can go, however the heat was always blasting. It regularly measured 80 degrees or more in our apartment. We definitely complained about it, but we were adjusted to it, so we mostly complained by joking. It was so nice those first few days to have the heat off and not wake up sweating.
Now the weather is regularly really warm, and I travelled to Maryland, as I mentioned in my last post. And the AC upstairs, where I sleep and work, is broken. So once again, I am living in an environment that is regularly upwards of 80 degrees. Fortunately a few days of AC is not enough to break my adjustment to the heat. It’s ironic to me, that I’d be so adjusted to the heat because part of my motivation for moving northwards was to get cold winters and hopefully some snow. I much prefer the cold to the heat, however humans are nothing if not adaptable.
