My very first post on this blog was a celebration of me learning to hand sew. My goal was to not just have a new skill, but to also begin the sustainable practice of mending my clothes. I didn’t post about it but I also tried to repair a pair of jeans that had worn through in the thighs, repair a split seam, adjust straps that were too loose, and more. Unfortunately none of these repairs lasted, in large part due to skill. I had just recently started my learning to sew journey. Now I haven’t been great about keeping up with this skill, but I also haven’t given up on making my closet more sustainable. I haven’t bought new clothes because I’ve committed to using what I have and I do intend to continue learning to repair clothes as needed.
My grandmother recently had to upgrade her sewing machine, so she passed her old one down to me. This sewing machine is older than my father and still functions beautifully. There is a bit of a learning curve for me in operating it correctly, but I am so excited for future projects. Immediately on my wish list, I have some curtains that are currently safety pinned, but could use actual hemming, some pants that also need to be hemmed, and I am hoping to replace a brown skirt that I passed down to a sibling. Stay tuned for updates, especially regarding the skirt.
