As the end of a long winter approaches, I’m struck by a seasonal urge to get my life together and be the best version of myself. Lately, that urge has been fixated on my wardrobe. I’ve noticed for a while I’m bored of my winter clothes. I don’t think I’m actually going to do an overhaul partially for sustainability reasons, partially for financial reasons. But I am feeling lost in what my style is and how to feel good in my clothes.
A large part of this feeling comes from the conflict between what I want my lifestyle to be and what it actually is. When I’m browsing Pinterest I lean towards a very feminine business casual type style, but in my day-to-day life I am very often not that put together. I tend to feel best in that type of style but I have depression and I work from home in an 80+ degree apartment (by force, our heat is broken). So I have days where I work in my pjs or I just change into leggings or sweatpants and a sports bra.
The other difficulty I run into is color. Online and in concept I notice I lean towards solid colors in rich tones. Shopping however is another story. Whether in person or online I am drawn to pastels and florals. However I almost never wear my florals because I don’t know how to style them with any variability.
Rather than panic buying clothes, which I have done earlier this year. I’m taking some suggestions from Morgan Evelyn Cook. I’m making a wish list of things I’d like to thrift. Right now I’m keeping it pretty short because I don’t want to intentionally discard perfectly good clothing just because I’m bored. As of now, I’m keeping my eye out for a pair of light to medium wash overalls either pants or shorts style and a long-sleeve white shirt. I’m not sure, how at the moment, but I’d love to incorporate some forest green and a saturated yellow into my wardrobe.
One suggestion from both MEC and Hannah Louise Poston that I haven’t taken yet, but I’m thinking of doing as I write this, is the idea of trying on and experimenting with my clothes at home. Off the top of my head I can think of a few pieces of clothes I have some questions about. Answering them would give me the information I need to decide if they continue to deserve space in my closet or should be replaced. If you’d like updates on this journey feel free to subscribe!
