Spring New England Style

The weekend after my last post I went to my local garden store. I immediately noticed the lack of stock. There were a lot of peonies, but not much else. The previous times I had been, once last spring and once in the fall, I remember every inch of the store overflowing with plants. In the spring visit in particular, it wasn’t just flowers; half the store was herbs, fruits, and vegetables.

I found a replacement lavender plant and decided to get some daisies to fulfill my wish for flowers. I almost didn’t get them because this store is incredibly generous, and on both previous visits, I had walked away with an extra plant friend. This visit was no exception, but a week later, I’m glad I got both; they bring so much joy.

As I was checking out, I asked the staff about other stock. They reminded me that April is still pretty cold, so they don’t bring most of their stock out until late May, after the threat of cold snaps is gone. I got really worried about how my new outdoor plants would do because, sure enough, we went from the mid-fifties days that had me so excited for spring back down to the thirties. So far, the plants are doing well. And thank goodness, because I started out with all intentions of keeping track of the highs and lows and bringing the plants in if I was worried about dropping near or below freezing, and then just a couple of days in, I forgot.
