Every last Saturday of April is National Independent Bookstore Day. It is an amazing celebration of small businesses that support reading and love of books. Last year I visited two different bookstores that were celebrating. This year I’ll be limiting myself to one bookstore partially because of time constraints, I’ll be going with my roommate who has other obligations later in the day. Other factors include finances, buying more books does not support my current goals, and space, my bookshelf is pretty full and I want to get through what I already have before adding to my TBR.
I am still excited to support my favorite independent bookstore Brookline Booksmith. Typically with NIBD, there will be a book (or two) that is being highlighted, depending on what that is it may be my one book purchase of the day. But there will also be both book-related and NIBD merch that I might find fun or useful. I know there tend to be some tote bags and T-shirts that I don’t need more of. However, there is also the chance for freebies like postcards or bookmarks that I find useful for decoration.
Regardless, I am excited to spend my day appreciating and celebrating the community around me that values reading and books as much as I do. Feel free to check back later in the day as I’ll either post or comment my experiences and purchases. I hope you will also find some time in your day to visit your local independent bookstore. You can double-check which bookstores are participating here. You may also find book crawls near you on this map. I would love to hear from you in the comments, how do you plan to celebrate?
