I was recently introduced to the concept of geomancy. I don’t believe in things like this, to be clear. I always start off entertained by these sorts of conspiracies, but the more I learn about it the more disgusting it becomes. Long story short geomancy is the divination of the earth. It claims that there are energies within certain areas of the world depending on historical sites and geographical features.
So naturally you have to start questioning who decides what sites and features are relevant? Well considering these theories where created independently in 1920s Britain and Germany, it’s mainly white men prioritizing European perspectives. In fact one subfield of geomancy claims that North America is going to be responsible for “healing” the Earth. I once again have questions. What does a healed Earth look like? Who does a healed Earth benefit, who does an unhealed Earth benefit? How does a continent heal the Earth? North America has existed for eons and been inhabited for millennia why isn’t the Earth already healed?
Of course, many geomancy siter or practitioners will tell you that localities can fall out of harmony requiring rebalance (which they will provide for a fee). But the reasons you might want a geomancer are always intentionally vague. On one hand I’m sure it’s partly so that you (the customer) can’t argue that the practitioner didn’t produce results. On the other I recognize that ritual can be medicine in a sense. I, however, don’t appreciate that there’s the sense of impunity on the practitioners behalf, which I’m sure allows a number of con artists to invade the field.
