Watercolor Crafts

These were the first two fall crafts I thought of when I created my autumn bucket list. And despite how it may seem to you as this is the first craft I’m posting they’re perfect examples of why having this public accountability is necessary for me. I have spent at least a week thinking I want to do my acorn cap painting and my leaf painting. These crafts would take 0 skills and would feel so cozy. Yet despite all that, I put off actually doing them for nearly a full week.

I was on my afternoon walk with my dog, taking my time to notice and appreciate the changing leaves, the crunch of those already on the ground, the crispness of the air. During this walk I found the perfect leaf for the painting and hyped myself up for how much I’d enjoy it. Still nothing prepared me for the satisfaction of that first brush stroke. The red I chose was the perfect deep saturated fall red and the line of the leaf edge showed perfectly. I was so proud of this work that I sent a picture to my partner with the wonky lighting of the back patio before I even removed the leaf.

I pretty immediately started on the acorn cap painting. With this one the fun was in the process not the outcome. Each press of the cap to the paper was unique. I got to play around with different methods of application to see how that changed the outcome. While the acorn cap painting isn’t one I’m going to be hanging up I am proud of myself for thinking of doing it and for letting myself have fun with the process.
